Cloud Systems Engineer – Telco Edge

Since 2019, and thanks to the support from the European Commission, OpenNebula Systems has been leading the edge computing innovation in Europe, investing heavily in research and open source development, and playing a key role in strategic EU initiatives such as the IPCEI-CIS and the “European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud”.

We are currently looking for a Cloud System Engineer to come and join us in Europe as part of our new team developing the next generation integrated solution for the Telco Cloud Edge.

Job Description

Cloud Systems Engineers are responsible for implementing, testing and maintaining the specific components and services of a cloud system. They work with various cloud services and technologies to deploy, configure, and manage cloud environments. Engineers tackle technical challenges, troubleshoot issues, and optimize cloud resource management for efficiency and reliability. You’ll work in an agile environment to design, develop, integrate, deploy, maintain and validate with use cases a new cloud-edge integrated solution for the Telco Edge market. You will also participate in the upstream community, on challenging projects deploying innovative edge/cloud systems.

What will you do

  • Helping define the design, roadmap and prototype of the cloud-edge architecture for an end-to-end integrated solution for the Telco Edge market
  • Designing the APIs, interfaces and data formats of the software components of the integrated cloud system
  • Development and testing of the Telco Edge software components, and their integration, deployment and validation using industry use cases
  • Test-driven development of large solutions integrating and extending open source products in collaboration with Telco providers, and using Git based workflows to develop new features in the project repositories
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting the performance and issues of the cloud system, and updating and maintaining the cloud system
  • Collaborating with other companies in the cloud-edge ecosystem within international projects and open-source communities. Availability to occasional travel and participation in international events and meetings
  • Collaborating with the services and support teams in support and issue troubleshooting and triage, the pre-sales team in discovery and demo sessions, and the community team in contributions to the open-source community
  • Writing and maintaining software documentation and project reports

 

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in cloud systems development and integration using open-source technologies
  • Familiarity with Telco networks topology
  • Hands-on experience in Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined networking (SDN) applied to wireline and wireless networks
  • Knowledgeable in 4G and 5G Radio network architecture and ecosystem, and 3GPP specifications
  • Telco Edge operation, management and orchestration (e.g., MANO), MEX specifications, Network Management, OSS/BSS, and TM Forum standards
  • Strong technical knowledge of open-source and/or disaggregated Telco solutions
  • Experience in designing, developing and maintaining Ruby code base for system applications with knowledge of computing systems integration and the interaction with the operating system facilities like I/O, networking and virtualization
  • Experience integrating computing systems specially related to virtualization, storage and networking. Knowledge of KVM/QEMU virtualization including Enhanced Platform Awareness capabilities (NUMA, CPU Pinning, and Huge Page), qcow2 and management of Virtual Machines. Knowledge of storage systems (usage and administration), in particular Ceph, NAS and SAN, specially for storing VM disk images.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux networking stack including VLAN protocols, package filtering, basic routing protocols, Open vSwitch, and DPDK.
  • Experience writing Terraform modules and managing deployments of virtualized infrastructures with Terraform. Experience using public Clouds (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, etc…), understand the limitations and peculiarities of the networking and storage model of each provider.
  • Experience deploying and using monitoring and alerting tools like Prometheus. Design monitoring metrics and associated data structure. Elaborate and analyze usage reports obtained from the monitor data.
  • Background in deploying and operating Kubernetes systems. Good understanding of k8s ecosystem, e.g. networking infrastructure (CNI), Helm and persistent storage solutions.
  • Experience with Cloud Management platforms and their associated technologies. Understand the implication of managing virtualized infrastructures and the orchestration of the underlying subsystems.
