The Opportunity and Position Summary

Rewiring America is growing rapidly. We seek an entrepreneurial Communications Associate to join our Communications team. This position reports to our Communications Manager.

The Communications Associate will join a growing communications team. This team manages inbound media requests and creatively pitches and puts forth Rewiring America’s ideas, policy and people. Additionally, this role will be focused on communications to closely support our Social Media Manager in content creation and executing our overall social media strategy.  

The Communications Associate plays a pivotal role in building our communications muscle, helping us develop, manage and track the key relationships that will get our work out into the world, and make electrification the default choice for every American. The Communications Associate must live and breathe media, and love tracking the evolution of stories, words and ideas relevant to our electrification effort. 

What You’ll Do
  • Proactive pitching and thoughtful sharing of our work to be of service to the cause of communicating electrification.
  • Build and maintain media lists and journalist relationships, both nationally and in our key markets.
  • Help manage all inbound media requests in a timely and organized manner.
  • Prepare briefing notes and talking points for all media engagements and public speaking events.
  • Leverage our social media channels, in close collaboration with our social media manager, to advance our narratives and communicate with journalists.
  • Proactively find new channels, journalists, audiences and venues for our message.
  • Draft media releases, advisories and blasts.
  • Monitor media for reactive response.

The Communications Associate plays a critical role in the evolution of Rewiring America from its start-up phase to a more mature organization and joins a fast-paced team that operates with a sense of urgency and a track record of success in science, technology, business, policy and politics. 

This role requires moxie and foresight, the ability to quickly respond to news, queries and criticism. Electrification is a story on a deadline, and we work to move and respond with clarity and swiftness. The successful candidate demonstrates a passion for getting ideas out into the world, and models excellence and integrity in all they do. The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications:

Core

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
  • Keen understanding of climate, policy, business and lifestyle media landscape, and how to pitch accordingly.
  • Fantastic, accurate and fun writing. You know how to bring the heart of a story to a pitch or presentation.
  • Ability to manage myriad media relationships, being attentive to the needs of various stakeholders, outlets and formats.
  • Great organizational skills. You enjoy presenting our media work in a thoughtful way for internal and external stakeholders, both.
  • Ability to quickly respond to all requests in a resourceful and helpful manner.
  • Good understanding of media metrics – and ability to present these findings in concise, digestible ways.

Preferred

  • 2-4 years professional experience
  • Background in communications, journalism, or media relations.
  • Content knowledge in climate, renewable energy and/or building electrification.
  • Previous experience in fast-paced media environments, managing a lot of inbound requests on tight timelines.

Benefits

The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $90,000 USD, commensurate with experience. Our comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (15 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment. Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment.
